Action for Children 150

In 2019, Action for Children celebrates 150 years of taking action to support children, young people, parent and carers across the UK. Founded by Methodist Minister Thomas Bowman Stephenson, it continues 'to do what's right, do what what's needed, and do what works for you children'.

As part of its national celebrations, you can read about its nationwide search for the descendants of some of the UK’s first children in care, and find out if any of your own ancestors were in one of the UK's first children's homes.

At United Church Dorchester, we are celebrating this significant milestone with a series of events - see the information below, and do join in if you can.

Saturday 22 June, from 2 – 4 pm: Garden Party

Come and enjoy the wonderful garden surroundings of 51 Coburg Road, Dorchester.

There will delicious cream teas and cakes, bring and buy, and a plant sale.

All will be very welcome – entry is just £2!

Saturday 13 July, 3 - 5pm Country Tea Dance

Come and enjoy a dance in the United Church Hall, and support Action for Children at the same time.

There will also be tea and cake! No charge for attending, but there will be donations to Action for Children.

Please note: some publicity suggested a 2pm start: it is definitely a 3pm start!

Sunday 14 July, 10.30am: Action for Children Morning Service (at United Church)

The service will be led by John Walker and the Action for Children Fundraising Group.

It will include collection of everyone's 'League of Light' boxes - don't forget to bring yours in!

For more information about the League of light boxes, have a look at last year's Action for Children 'Thank you' newsletter to all Methodist supporters. One key point to note is that the boxes help to raise around half a million pounds - so this is all contributing to a very important cause.

Saturday 7 December (details to be confirmed): Encore Singers Christmas concert

The Encore Singers are well known for the delightful concerts - this one will be held in aid of Action for Children.

Further details will be added here once they are confirmed: please keep checking and get the date in your diary!

16, 18, 23 December (provisional dates): Carol singing around Dorchester

The annual Carol singing through the streets of Dorchester, accompanied by the United Church Brass.

Everyone is always welcome to come and join us as we sing well known carols for local residents - who often come out to listen, and make requests! Even if you are not sure about singing in public - do come along, as we always need door-to-collectors.

A knitting opportunity: Christmas Angels

Would you be able to knit some Christmas Angels to support the work of the Action for Children fundraising committee? Last year, some 400 knitted angels were donated to families and children during the Carol singing and Journey to the Stable events - and we'd like to do the same this year.

You can explore the background to the work, and find more about how to get involved (including how to get the pattern for the angels), by reading this information sheet.
